Would You Like To Live off the Grid?

by Dale Green

Have you always dreamed of being self sufficient, being able to live off the grid and supply your own energy? If you’re like most of us, you’ve at least thought about it before. It once was that just about the only way to do this was to live in an area so remote that no existing electrical grid would reach. Now, the choice to live off the gridis something which is available to an increasing number of people, most concerned more with saving on their electric bill than with living off the land. However, if you’ve found some remote property, you may have to learn to live off the grid out of necessity rather than choice.

If you are looking to buy property for living off the grid though, you need to think about a few things before buying. Make sure if you are going to be building from scratch that your land has proper drainage for a septic tank. Also decide which power source you are going to be using.

If you are going solar power you need the right amount of full sun to produce your energy needs. These solar power systems work best when pointing to the south. You want enough power to have the amount electricity you know for sure that you will be using. You will also need to heat your water and your house.

If you happen to live in an area which gets a lot of wind, then you may be able to meet your energy needs by using wind turbines as well as solar power systems. Together, the two should be able to supply all of the power you’ll need.

Now you will also need to think how you are going to support yourself, if you are so far off the grid, that you have to quit your job to live there. This means often times developing new talents or ones that have been dormant for years.

Did you grow up on a farm and know that you could support yourself this way? Then go for it, there is a big demand for organic produce these days. So you just may make it work. And doing this along with using solar or wind energy, you will be doing something that does not harm the planet.

If you’re a writer or an artist, then you may be able to continue your current line of work and live off the grid. You’ll have a peaceful place to create your work; and you can sell it online and keep in touch with the outside world via email and phone (make sure that the area has cell phone reception and that you can get on the web though).

Do you find the idea of living off the gridattractive? It can be a viable way to live for many people - just keep in mind that you’ll have to be careful about your power usage. You’ll have to produce all of your own energy; and being an energy hog and living off the grid are not compatible.
