Solar Energy Facts For Students

It is no secret that energy obtained from the sun drives life on the earth. This energy in recent times has gained prominence due to the fact that solar energy can be used in many ways to benefit humans. Extensive research has gone into this fact that solar energy can be a substitute for fossil fuels. In fact renewable energy studies are going on at the university level and even elementary and middle schools are teaching about the facts of solar energy.

Solar energy is the sun’s heat that reaches the earth. The fact that solar energy can be converted directly or indirectly into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity is gaining prominence now. The advantages of solar energy are many. But the major drawbacks of solar energy are: (1) the intermittent and variable manner in which it arrives at the earth’s surface and, (2) the large area required for collecting it at a useful rate. If man depends on solar energy for everything then he becomes a slave to the whims of the sun.

Solar energy facts are helpful to kids to conduct experiments at school level. Various competitions, science fairs are held at schools to create awareness among kids to the facts of solar energy.

In the 1830s, the British astronomer John Herschel used a solar collector box to cook food during an expedition to Africa. Now, people are trying to use the sun’s energy for a whole lot of things.

Another important fact of solar energy is the distribution system. How to collect all the energy and make it available to the common man through a public distribution system is intriguing.

School kids are made aware of the fact that solar energy can make the earth pollution free and a clean and green earth will welcome our generations to come. This is fun stuff for middle school kids and they enjoy these environment friendly classes. This makes the kids to think and arrive at solutions.

Songs are written about the sun and the effects of sun on earth. The ‘sun is still shining’ is a rock music album sung by a band “moody blues”. The music is both space-themed and spacey, and the melodious reflections about all the places “out there” help bring clarity to one’s thoughts about our earth. Since rock music is a rage among kids, this is the best way to create awareness in kids about the solar energy facts.

Solar energy cartoons, jokes and fun articles are posted on websites for kids to get attracted to studying about the facts of solar energy.

Countries like Africa where basic amenities like water and electricity are missing in most areas; the government is making efforts to use solar energy to satisfy the basic needs of villagers. Village primary schools now have at least two illuminated classrooms where children can comfortably do their lessons. This creates awareness amongst kids to the facts of solar energy.

The children of today are the citizens of tomorrow. Let us educate them to the facts of solar energy and to various other benefits nature has bestowed on us.
