There different systems involving solar powers as form of renewable energy. The off-grid system is one of this. The system generates electrical power independently apart from the utility grid. This system is what everyone wants for when it comes to electricity supply. But before you decide to move to this system, consider first the facts behind it.

When you take that final step and set up a stand-alone off-grid system, you are firing your utility company and taking on this responsibility yourself. There will be no service truck coming out in the middle of the night if you suddenly lose power or pinpoint a problem from a power surge. You may very well find yourself respecting that money hungry utility company that you had learned to hate over the years.

You are probably saving money from utility expenses. If this is your reason for deciding to move to off-grid system, then, make up your mind once again. Using an off-grid system to generate electricity and store it for future use will also cost you more money. Higher initial investment is the first thing to consider when deciding to move off-grid. With off-grid systems, large battery where the electricity will be stored and a generator machine are needed.

Batteries for storing your homemade energy can run into thousands of dollars, have a short shelf life of five to fifteen years and lose much of their efficiency by the end of the cycle. Another downside is too much energy. You can only store so much energy before it has to be used or dumped somewhere. Suddenly, what you have been trying so hard to produce, is out the window. You will need to arrange your living schedule to coincide with peak times of your energy creation and to utilize the overproduced energy before losing.

Renewable energy through the off-grid system may not be the practical solution. There are times that you will have to use a backup generator just to keep the supply of electricity going. At times when power is not available, you will not be able to use your appliances. This may cause damage to your appliances.

Aside from the expenses and the limitations of the system, you also have to consider the maintenance and labor to be applied in going off-grid. Your independence will require you to gain knowledge about the mechanics of the system in case some problems arise. Instead of hiring someone to do the necessary maintenance for your system, you will save more if you know how to do it yourself.

Totally freeing yourself from a governing body like the utility company is not impossible to do but you have to look at your options and wonder if making this dramatic move is really in your best interest. Staying tied to your current grid and getting used to your new renewable energy system might work out better in the beginning. You would have something to fall back on while learning the ropes and getting familiar with something totally foreign to you.

A battery less grid-tie system is recommended for those just getting their feet wet. An inverter is connected to the utility grid, no backup batteries and your surplus energy goes to the utility. Add the backup battery after you are comfortable and move on from there. Who knows, maybe the costs will continue to decrease and you will find yourself spending less money, too.
